FAQs for Admission to Millennium High School
1. How can I obtain an application to Millennium High School?
Application is made through the NYC Department of Education High School Admission process. If you are a student currently attending 8th grade in a NYC public school, you will receive an application from your middle school counselor before the deadline. 9th grade students interested in applying to 10th grade should request an application from their high school guidance counselors before the deadline.
If you attend a private or parochial school or if you have just moved to NYC, please contact the Office of Student Enrollment at the NYC Department of Education at 212-374-0291 or 212-374-6769 for information on obtaining an application.
2. What is the deadline for applications?
The deadline to submit an application to your counselor is: December 4, 2009. But as some schools have an earlier deadline, you should confirm the deadline date with your own counselor.
3. Can students who live outside of Manhattan or District 2 apply?
We accept students from all five boroughs, so you do not need to live in a certain borough or district to apply; however, we do give preference to students who live or attend school below Houston Street in Manhattan. In 2008, we had over 4,200 applications for 150 seats.
4. What is the selection criteria for admission to Millennium High School?
- A minimum 85% average (average of all core classes)
- Fewer than 10 combined absences and late marks
- Citywide standardized test scores in level 3 or 4
5. Which grade do you consider for the minimum criteria?
Applying to 9th: we look at 7th grade (2008-09 school year)
Applying to 10th: we look at 8th grade (2008-09 school year) 6. What if I had more than 10 absences or late marks?
We will take medical issues and family crises into consideration. Please include a doctor’s note when you send your portfolio (see more info below).
7. Should I submit my report card?
No. We receive records of grades, test scores, attendance and punctuality directly from the DOE. Students applying from private or parochial schools can include a copy of their report cards with their portfolios.
8. Are there additional requirements for admission?
It is optional to send a portfolio which includes:
- A one page personal essay: Tell us about a challenging problem and how you solved it. It may be hand written or typed and either single or double spaced is fine.
- One sample of written work from an English or Social Studies class from 7th, 8th or 9th grade. The sample must be graded and have the student's name and current school on the front page The sample will not be returned.
Please note: Both items must be included in the portfolio and they must be sent together. We will discard partial or separate submissions. Please ensure that the student's name and current school are written on the front page of both the essay and writing sample.
9. Where do I send the writing sample and essay?

Please send the essay and writing sample together. Do not send them separately. We will discard partial or separate submissions. Also, include your doctor's note if necessary (see #6). Please note:
- We cannot verify receipt for submissions. If you would like confirmation that we have received your submission, please send via certified mail or use a delivery service such as UPS or Fed Ex that can confirm delivery for you.
- We do not accept submissions via fax or e-mail under any circumstances.
- We will accept hand deliveries at the school security desk until the deadline (we do not give receipts).
- Submissions sent after the deadline will be rejected.
10. When is the deadline to submit the portfolio?
December 4, 2009 (postmarked by this date)
11. Do I need to take an entrance examination?
No. We are not a testing school.
12. Do I need to make an appointment for an interview?
No. We do not give interviews.
13. Should I submit teacher recommendations?
No. We do not accept teacher recommendations.
14. Can I visit the school before listing Millennium on my application?
Yes! We welcome students applying to 9th grade to tour our school during the fall. Registration is required to attend. Click on the "Admissions" tab and scroll down to "School Tours" for more information.
15. How do I register for a tour?
You must register through our website. Please click on the "Admissions" tab and scroll down to "School Tours." We do not take registration via e-mail or phone.
16. What if a tour is booked before I get a chance to register?
We apologize, but we are a small school and can only register a maximum of 200 people for each tour. Registration fills up very quickly, so please log on early.
17. Can I come on a tour without registering?
Please do not. All families must sign in when they arrive and security checks their names. Our tours are too full to accommodate anyone who shows up unannounced, so please do not come if you have not received a confirmation for a tour.
18. Will I still be able to apply if I don't attend a tour?
Yes. You are not required to tour the school to be considered for admission.
19. How can get I get more information on Millennium High School if I don’t have a chance to visit the school?
